Dr. Josephine Johnson Sankofa Award

Open to full and part-time students who will be enrolled in any year of study of any program at any campus where the eligible programs are offered.
Application assessment will consider
- Financial need
- Commitment and interest in program
- Good academic standing
- Self-identification: Historically Indigenous Black / African Nova Scotian
- Preference: Students enrolled in the Child and Youth Care and Early Child Hood Education programs
About the award
Dr. Josephine Johnson – Dr. Josephine Johnson has a long and inspiring history of caring for and supporting the North Preston community. Her lifelong commitment to community building, empowerment, and education has made her a deeply respected leader whose impact continues across generations. Her legacy extends into the creation of the Africentric ECE program at NSCC, a program shaped in part through the contributions of her granddaughter, Kerri Johnson.
Dr. Johnson’s dedication to uplifting African Nova Scotian families and strengthening community connections embodies the values at the heart of this award. Naming this award in her honour would not only celebrate her remarkable contributions but also reinforce meaningful community engagement and ensure ongoing support and pride from her family.
