The Marine Atlantic Cadet Officer Sponsor-a-Student Opportunity


Marine Atlantic

Open to full or part-time students enrolled any year of Marine Engineering Technology or Marine Navigation Technology at the Strait Area Campus. This sponsorship is renewable for students in multi-year programs based on successful completion of first year and remaining in good academic standing with successful performance reviews.


Application assessment will consider

  • Career aspirations
  • Good academic standing
  • Preference is given to applicants who self-identify as female and/or Mi’kmaw / Indigenous persons
  • Applicants must be Canadian citizens or Permanent residents
  • Prior to the selection of the award, eligible applicants will be required to submit a resume and successfully complete an interview with Marine Atlantic Inc. to discuss possible future employment, as well as work placement and/or co-op opportunities


Payment details

  • Successful recipients will be eligible for up to $5,000 upon selection to cover tuition, books, and other program-related expenses.
  • 50% ($2,500) of the funding will be issued upon selection
  • The remaining 50% ($2,500) will be issued upon successful completion of a work placement


Work integrated learning and/or post graduate work requirements

  • Work terms will be available to cadets who are selected.
  • Cadets who are accepted will complete their sea time requirements with MAI and will be paid for these periods.
  • Sponsored cadets must commit to a 1 year return of service agreement for every year of sponsorship post graduation.


Requirements for Successful Candidates

  • Cadets must keep MAI informed of any academic or personal issues that may impact their studies or sea phases.
  • Recipients may be requested to provide end of semester academic status updates to MAI’s Recruitment and Training Department.
  • Cadets who do not adhere to the standards of the program requirements based on academic and workplace performance may be removed from the program at the sole discretion of the employer.
  • Upon successful completion of their academic program, including sea time assignments and performance reviews at Marine Atlantic, Cadets will be hired by Marine Atlantic as Officers and be subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Agreement between MAI and Canadian Merchant Service Guild Agreement “A” Vessel Officers.

Marine Atlantic Inc. (MAI) is a federal crown corporation which operates a year-round ferry service, that is an essential transportation link between Newfoundland and mainland Canada. MAI operates a 96 nautical mile daily ferry service between Port aux Basques, NL and North Sydney, NS. In addition, MAI operates a 280 nautical mile summer seasonal ferry service between Argentia, NL and North Sydney, NS. Given the essential nature of our service, it is vital to MAI that there is a steady and reliable supply of new officers within each vessel department. Marine Atlantic is pleased to offer to cadets an exciting opportunity to apply to our Cadet Officer Sponsorship Program (COSP). MAI considers this program as a key initiative to supply future Navigation and Engineering Officers for our vessel operations.
