Robert McKelvie Memorial Award


Robert McKelvie

Open to full and part-time students who will be enrolled in any year of study of eligible programs at any campus where the eligible programs are offered. This award is renewable for students in multi-year programs (based on successful completion of first year in program and remaining in good academic standing).


Eligible programs include

  • Business Administration
  • Culinary Management
  • Culinary Skills
  • Baking and Pastry Arts
  • Tourism Hospitality


Application assessment will consider

  • Career aspirations and passion for the culinary industry
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and a demonstrated interest in starting own business
  • Commitment to the community
  • Good academic standing


About the award
Robert D. McKelvie was a community leader, an entrepreneur and a restauranteur. It was his strong entrepreneurial spirit that led to the establishment of several restaurants in Halifax including: McKelvie’s, Salty’s, Quincy’s and others. As a passionate student and teacher, supporting those on their educational journey is a powerful legacy to honour Robert. He is remembered for his passion and commitment to the restaurant industry, the mentoring of youth and the betterment of his community. For his family, they remember his creativity, his willingness to take risks, his ‘you can do anything’ attitude, his determination, thoughtfulness, generosity, humility and his strong sense of family.

 
This award has been established to help students pursuing a career in the culinary industry with an aspiration to start their own business. This award is intended to keep Robert’s passion for cooking and entrepreneurship alive by supporting those that have a similar drive and determination to succeed.  A statement that Robert shared with family, holds true for those seeking an entrepreneurial life, especially one in the culinary world: “Your best friends won’t make your business but in your business you’ll make your best friends.”
