Nujo’tme’k Samqwan Award (Taking Responsibility for our Water)

Open to full or part-time students who will be enrolled in any year of study in eligible programs at any campus where the eligible programs are offered. This award is renewable for students in multi-year programs (based on successful completion of first year in program and remaining in good academic standing).

  • Emergency Management
  • Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology (ESET)
  • Environmental Engineering Technology – Water Resources
  • Geographic Information Systems Technician
  • Geospatial Data Analytics
  • Human Resources
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Natural Resources Environmental Technology
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Plumbing


Application assessment will consider

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstration of what sustainable water and wastewater management means to student and their community
  • Overview of why they want to be part of building a solution to the long-standing water challenges faced by Atlantic First Nations
  • Connection to the land and how they hope to bring their knowledge and experience back to Indigenous communities
  • Good academic standing
  • Self-identification: Indigenous, specifying the nation and community that they are connected to


About the donor
The Atlantic First Nations Water Authority (AFNWA) represents progress, innovation, and a long-term solution for water and wastewater problems that affect Atlantic First Nations communities. Once fully operational in Spring 2022, this pan-Atlantic Utility will provide a common standard for water & wastewater services along with improved management and increased resources to deal with long standing water challenges faced by Atlantic First Nations. As part of the Water Authority approach to sustainable service delivery, we are offering this award to promote careers in the water sector to Indigenous students. We are looking to support the future leaders in water and wastewater management.

Included with this award is an opportunity for the successful recipient to complete their required work term with AFNWA. Conditions of employment, such as criminal background check and a clean Driver’s Abstract, must be met and are at the sole discretion of the AFNWA.
