About the award
Born in Butte, Montana on July 15, 1906, John Carl MacIsaac (“JC”) and family soon moved to Cape Breton Island. JC grew up in Glencoe Mills before moving to Timmins when he was 18 years old. JC would spend the next 20+ years working for a variety of mining companies before setting out on his own as a mining contractor in 1947. MacIsaac Industries Ltd. was incorporated in 1953 and for the next four decades, he worked in mining operations across Canada and beyond. Along with mining, JC founded one of Northern Ontario’s largest steel fabricating plants and established Northern Ontario’s only horse racing facility.

As a proud Cape Bretoner, his Foundation has established this award in his memory to help other Cape Bretoners pursue their post secondary education.
