The Ujima Award


Open to full and part-time students enrolled in any year of study in any program at any campus.


Application assessment will consider

  • Financial need
  • Career interest
  • Community involvement and volunteerism
  • Good academic standing
  • Self-identification: African Nova Scotian or of African Descent (Black, African Canadian or African American)


About the award
Ujima is one element of Nguzo Saba, or “The Seven Principles” of Africentrism. Ujima means “Collective Work and Responsibility: To build and maintain our community together and make our brother’s and sister’s problems our problems and to solve them together.”

The Ujima Award has been established with the support and endorsement of NSCC’s Black African Employee Resource Network (BAERN). This award represents the BAERN’s guiding principles of promoting the safety, equity and inclusion of People of African descent in NSCC’s policies, programs, and campus life across the province, as well as the visibility, connection and support for Black and African Nova Scotian students. This award is a form of reparations for the Black and African Nova Scotian community and will assist in reducing systemic barriers that members of this community encounter on their path towards achieving equitable education.
