The Brian Fisher Scholarship

Open to full and part-time students who will be enrolled in Geographic Information Systems at the Annapolis Valley Campus – Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS).

Application assessment will consider

• Financial need
• Strength of character, collaboration, support of inclusion and compassion towards others
• Good academic standing

About the award
Brian led a life committed to his family, friends, community and work. He was passionate about rocks, those found in nature and those in the curling rink. Brian loved being a geologist. He began his career as a field geologist, then enrolled in COGS, obtaining his GIS Diploma in 1990, and GIS became a true passion. Brian led the province’s GIS development team that successfully pioneered a GIS system that is looked upon nationally as the model for other jurisdictions. Brian was dedicated and committed, continuing to work until no longer physically able, ending his career as Director, Geological Survey Division, Energy and Mines, NS. Brian passed away on January 1, 2021 from ALS-related complications.

Brian exemplified what we all hope to find in people, kindness and compassion, and this was how he was described continually by those that knew him. He was, quite simply, a true gentleman – kind, compassionate, gentle and noble.

We hope the recipient of this scholarship will continue to exemplify that which Brian believed in – love for family and community, commitment to career, and most important, kindness towards all. Being a Montreal Canadiens fan is optional although Brian would greatly approve.
