About the award
Ruth Pulsifer was a loving wife, a caring mother, a loyal friend – and an educator and a trusted counsellor to many hundreds of students over the course of her life.

Ruth taught English at Onslow Jr. High and later transferred to Cobequid Educational Center (CEC).  Her ability to see potential in others, combined with her dedication to support learners, landed her a job as Guidance Counsellor where she quickly won the respect of students and staff.  Eventually promoted to Guidance Head at CEC in the early 80’s, Ruth led a team of counsellors to shepherd some 1700 students and she was compassionately involved in the lives of countless young people until her retirement in 1994.

In 2002, Ruth was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for her inexhaustible fundraising and communications efforts toward the construction and launch of Rotary House – a vocational and life skills training center of the Colchester Community Workshops Foundation for the intellectually disabled – where she served as board member from 2001-2005.

Over a lifetime of concern for others, Ruth served the Butler Center (CAMR), Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Heritage Society, Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, Nova Scotia Education Council, and Dalhousie Board of Governors where she served as President of the Dalhousie Alumni Association.

A dedicated teacher, counselor and humanitarian, Ruth believed in helping others find their highest order of existence. For this reason, the Determination Fund, named in her honour, was created to support ALP graduates continue in their studies at NSCC.
