About the award
CIBC Wood Gundy has established the Herb Levine Memorial Bursary to encourage and support students interested in a career in financial services.

Herb Levine spent over sixty years in the investment business in Halifax. He started out in 1961 as a teenager transcribing stock quotes from a ticker tape onto a chalk board for traders in the Pitfield Securities Halifax office. Seeing his potential, he was promoted over time to more senior positions and later joined Scotia Bond’s offices in Halifax and ran their trading floor. As the firms that he worked for amalgamated over time with larger firms, he continued to oversee the syndication trading desk locally for Midland Walwyn, Merrill Lynch and finally CIBC Wood Gundy. Herb was also a savvy investor and his portfolio management advice was sought by many business icons in Nova Scotia. His favorite role though, and that for which he was beloved, was to freely give his time to mentor the younger members of his firms, a true lasting legacy, and the reason for the creation of this bursary in his name by his colleagues.
