Derek Lugar Memorial Award

Open to full and part-time students enrolled in the Automotive Service and Repair program at campuses where the eligible program is offered.

Application assessment will consider

• Career aspirations and commitment and interest in program
• Good academic standing
• Preference: students from the Truro and greater Colchester County area or Halifax Regional Municipality

About the award
Derek Lugar (1958-2021) had a lifelong interest in cars and a natural ability to connect to people through the automotive business. Derek grew up in Halifax where he fixed cars in the garage at home and later chose a career in the automotive industry. He found a natural fit working as a Volkswagen Dealer Principal in Truro for 31 years. Derek truly enjoyed giving every customer the best possible service and instilled a sense of pride throughout his dealership and amongst service staff. He was especially proud of his “Vantage family”; those who devoted their time and energy in building the dealership together. Derek was a proud member of the Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Association and he would be very grateful that the association supports new entrants to the automobile industry through an annual award in his name.
