Morton Simmonds Educational Scholarship - Fall
Open to full and part-time students enrolled in any year of Criminal Justice at any campus where the eligible program is offered. This award is renewable for students in multi-year programs (based on successful completion of first year in program and remaining in good academic standing).
Application assessment will consider
- Work history relating to a profession in Criminal Justice
- Strong work ethic and a commitment to extracurricular activities and/or community service
- Commitment to the chosen field/career
- Good academic standing
- Self-identification: African Nova Scotian and/or Mi’kmaw/Indigenous and a Canadian citizen
This opportunity will remain open until the desired number of applications has been reached. Therefore, the NSCC Student Awards Office reserves the right to close this award at anytime.

About the award
The Morton Simmonds Educational Scholarship was created to support and encourage African Nova Scotian students enrolled in the Criminal Justice Diploma Program at Nova Scotia Community College. Named in honour of Mr. Morton Simmonds, the first African Nova Scotian Correctional Officer in Atlantic Canada, this award is made possible through the support of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.
Included with this scholarship is an opportunity to complete a field placement in a Nova Scotia correctional facility. Conditions for employment must be met and are at the sole discretion of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.
