About the award
The Maggie McFarlane Memorial Award has been established in memory of Maggie McFarlane and celebrates her life.
In September of 2013, Margaret-Ann (Maggie) McFarlane began the Public Relations program at the NSCC Waterfront Campus. Maggie began the program eager to embark on a career change and resolute in her determination to balance her education and her beloved family at home. With a 3 year old daughter and 1.5 year old son this was no easy task but one that Maggie accomplished as she usually did any task she set her mind to completing. Further evidence of her success in this endeavour were the many close friendships she developed with classmates (some of whom were 10-15 years her junior) and performed to her expected level attaining the highest academic standing in the class.
In the PR program Maggie found a newfound professional passion which sparked an enthusiasm for a career in PR. In May of 2014, as she was in the middle of a work term project, Maggie first fell ill. She was sent careening off on a medical odyssey before she was able to truly embark on her newfound career, ultimately passing away in September of 2015. This award is intended to honour Maggie’s memory by providing financial assistance to another PR student who has been likewise inspired and made a commitment to the program and the Public Relations field.
