About the donor
This award has been made possible by the generosity of Southwest Properties Limited.

Southwest Properties was founded by Simon Spatz, a Holocaust survivor, who emigrated to Canada with his wife Riva in February 1950. Upon settling in Halifax, Simon worked in local grocery stores to learn English and in 1952, he purchased the Southend Market and worked to build his business into a thriving market.

While still managing the grocery store, Simon launched his real estate business, Spatz Rentals and Real Estate. He started with a few houses and bought his first apartment building on Tobin Street (which we still own today), and soon after built his first building on Morris St. As his passion for building and love of real estate grew, he sold his grocery store, changed the name of his company to Southwest Apartments, and went into real estate full time.

If you have a passion for building, maintaining, and operating exceptional and sustainable spaces where your community can live, shop, work and play, Southwest Properties would be honoured to play a part in your educational journey.
