The Derek Hines Memorial Bursary
Open to full or part-time students enrolled in any year of the Occupational Health & Safety program at the Institute of Technology (IT) Campus.
Application assessment will consider
- Financial Need
- Commitment and interest in program
- Why strict adherence to occupational health and safety protocols are critically important on worksites
- How they intend to be an advocate for improving occupational health and safety protocols when they enter the workforce
- Academic merit (minimum 70% average in their studies)
About the award
Derek was a strong, passionate and loyal man. Derek loved unconditionally and believed there is good in every person. Derek always left an impact on everyone he crossed paths with. His smile would light up a room, his sense of humor and laughter were contagious. Derek was a team player in life and at work. He would always go above and beyond to help anyone in need, he always knew what he stood for and what he believed in, even if that meant standing alone. Derek enjoyed spending time with his beloved children & his family. He loved the outdoors no matter the season. Derek loved hockey and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played minor hockey for many years in the East Hants community. Derek was a strong leader and always wanted those he cared about to succeed in all they set out to accomplish. The Derek Hines Memorial Bursary was created as part of a penalty imposed by the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia for an offence under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
