The Doreen Paris Memorial Award
Open to full and part-time students enrolled in any year of study of any program at any campus.
Application assessment will consider
- Financial need
- Commitment and interest in program
- Community involvement, volunteerism and extra-curricular activities
- Community leadership
- Good academic standing
- Self-identification: Historically Indigenous Black / African Nova Scotian or Black / African Descent
About the award
Doreen Paris was a powerhouse for positive change and uplift for our African Nova Scotia community. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women and served as the Nova Scotia Representative to the Status of Women Hearings at the United Nations in New York City in 2000. She served as the third non-clergy female Moderator of the African United Baptist Association (AUBA) of Nova Scotia and President of the AUBA Women’s Institute. She was a facilitator with the Nova Scotia Home for Coloured Children Inquiry.
Doreen was also an active member of Second United Baptist Church in New Glasgow, where she served as a long-standing member of the Ladies Auxiliary and sat on many other committees. In addition, Doreen served as a board member and Chairperson for the Tearmann Society; board member of New Leaf, Pictou County Help Line, the Family Home Child Care, Addiction Services and Pictou County Society for Sexual Health. Doreen passed away in 2019. Her presence and her advocacy work is greatly missed.
