About the award

Eric Davidson was an accomplished automobile mechanic and well known survivor of the 1917 Halifax Explosion. Despite being blinded at only two years of age in the disaster, Eric overcame his disability to achieve his lifelong goal of a career as an auto mechanic. Eric was employed at various dealerships in Halifax, Ottawa and Toronto before securing a job at Halifax City Field where he worked for 25 years on the city’s fleet of heavy equipment and trucks until his retirement. His hobby was restoring antique cars and his favourite car was the Canadian made McLaughlin Buick. His expertise in the repair of Rolls Royce engines earned him the nickname, “The Rolls Man”. In keeping with his hobby, Eric was a founding member of the Halifax Antique Car Club in 1963. Eric lived his life according to his plan rather than accepting the established boundaries that society set for people with disabilities. He married, raised a family and owned his own home in the former Richmond district of North End Halifax. Once retired Eric volunteered for over 25 years at Camp Hill Hospital and at Northwood where he entertained residents playing banjo in the Fun Band. A remarkable man and a champion of courage, Eric was admired by all who knew him and respected throughout Halifax and beyond.
